Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to arrive in North Korea's capital Pyongyang on Tuesday evening. It will be his first visit to the country in 24 years. During his two-day stay, Putin will hold a summit with the country's leader Kim Jong Un, and the two are expected to sign a treaty that includes enhancement of economic and security cooperation. Putin contributed an article published in Tuesday's edition of Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's ruling party newspaper. In the article, he praised North Korea for consistently supporting Russia's conflict with Ukraine. Putin also said the two nations will put bilateral cooperation on a higher level, strengthen their sovereignty and deepen economic and trade relations. He stressed his intention to boost ties in a wide range of fields to counter the United States. Putin arrived in Yakutsk in the Russian Far East on Tuesday. He is due to depart for North Korea after touring the city and meeting local officials. Russia's presidential office says Putin will arrive in Pyongyang late Tuesday evening, local time. The meeting with Kim is scheduled for Wednesday. The two leaders are expected to sign an agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership, including military cooperation.
