Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of a retaliatory measure against recent moves by the United States and European nations to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with Western-supplied weapons.

Putin referred to the Western moves during a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of foreign news agencies, including those from Japan, the US and Europe.

He questioned why Russia does not have the right to send its weapons of the same class to those parts of the world where strikes can be delivered on sensitive facilities in those countries that have been doing so.

The New York Times reported about the remarks made by the deputy chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament's committee on national security, defense and intelligence.

It quoted Yehor Chernev as saying on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had destroyed missile launchers in the Russian region of Belgorod, by using US-provided rocket system, HIMARS.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk has indicated in social media that the country's forces may have used Western-supplied weapons to attack Russian territory.

But her post later became inaccessible. Various views had emerged about whether Western arms were actually used in Ukrainian strikes inside Russia, following the US and European authorization for Ukraine.
