The head of China&#039;s supreme court has vowed to step up law enforcement efforts to stabilize society, after a series of random attacks on citizens.
        
                    
                  
The president and chief justice of the Supreme People&#039;s Court, Zhang Jun, spoke at a plenary session of the National People&#039;s Congress, attended by President Xi Jinping, on Saturday in Beijing.
        
                    
                  
He referred to the recent indiscriminate attacks, including a car-ramming assault in November in Guangdong Province, which left 35 people dead.
        
                    
                  
Observers say economic hardship and grievances against society are behind such incidents.
        
                    
                  
Zhang vowed to swiftly and rigorously punish those who defy the bottom line of law and morality.
        
                    
                  
Zhang also said cases over unpaid salaries and other labor issues are increasing. He expressed his commitment to taking measures to maintain the stability of society by removing inconsistencies and risks.
        
                    
                  
The chief justice said 33,000 people stood trial last year on corruption charges including for bribery, adding that the number rose by 22 percent year-on-year. A number of Cabinet members and senior military officers who were believed to be close to Xi have been ousted due to corruption charges.
        
                    
                  
Zhang reported that criminal cases related to fraud rings rose by 26 percent to 40,000 last year, reflecting the thriving activities of Chinese and other scam groups in Myanmar. He vowed to crack down on cross-border criminal activities.
