South Korea's military says North Korea fired artillery shells into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday for the second straight day. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that at around 10 a.m the North fired about 90 rounds eastward from Kosong County, which is located in the southeastern province of Kangwon. It says the North also fired around 10 rounds to the east from Kumgang County in the province at around 6 p.m. on the same day. The South says shells fell into waters north of the Northern Limit Line, a de facto maritime border, in violation of the 2018 inter-Korean military accord. The aim of that agreement was to reduce tensions. The South's military has demanded that the North halt the firings immediately. On Monday, North Korea fired a total of about 130 artillery shells into waters on the east and west of the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang's General Staff of the Korean People's Army said it ordered frontline units to open artillery fire as a warning to the South. The North said it took the step after it confirmed that South Korea had fired artillery shells from multiple rocket launchers. The North's firings come amid ongoing tensions between the two Koreas. Seoul's Yonhap News Agency said South Korean and US forces conducted joint drills in the South Korean province of Gangwon from Monday through Tuesday. It added that multiple rocket launchers were used.
