The carnival excitement is reaching a climax in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a parade of top samba dance teams has gotten under way.
                
The Rio Carnival&#039;s biggest attraction, a contest featuring dances and music by selected groups, kicked off at a special venue in the city center on Sunday.
                
Twelve teams, consisting of about 3,000 members each, are parading down a street for about 700 meters, accompanied by huge floats.
                
Dancers in colorful and stunning costumes are showing off dynamic samba steps to the irresistible beat of drums.
                
Each team is performing under different themes, such as the carnival&#039;s history and the culture of the country&#039;s Black people.
                
The parade is scheduled to continue day and night through Tuesday morning.
                
Rio&#039;s carnival was canceled for the first time ever in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The street parade was called off last year as well.
                
The nine-day festival, which began last Friday, is the first carnival to be held as normal in three years.
