Ohtani Shohei earns his first win of season NHK

Major League Baseball two-way star Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Angels has earned his first win of the season with three hits, one run and eight strikeouts in six innings.

Ohtani was the starting pitcher in the game against the Seattle Mariners at their home stadium on Wednesday, after starting for his team's season-opener last week.

Ohtani struggled with his control at the beginning. He walked the first two batters, and gave up a run on a single by Eugenio Suarez. But he struck out two batters to overcome the difficult situation.

The Angels turned the game around at 2-1 in the second inning with a two-run homer by rookie catcher Logan O'Hoppe.

In the third, Ohtani allowed two hit-by-pitches and a walk. With two outs and the bases loaded, he got the next batter to ground out with a breaking ball, and did not allow any additional runs.

In the sixth inning, Ohtani struck out three batters in a row to keep a one-run lead, before leaving the mound.

At the plate as a designated hitter and batting third in the lineup, Ohtani got a run-scoring hit in the seventh.

The Angels won the game, 4-3.

Ohtani said his control of his fastballs was poor, but he was satisfied that he pitched through the sixth inning.
Summary
Shohei Ohtani of Los Angeles Angels earns first win, pitching 6 innings with 8 strikeouts, 1 run allowed; also contributes a run-scoring hit as designated hitter in 4-3 victory over Seattle Mariners. Struggled with control initially but managed to overcome difficult situations.
