Russia carries out large-scale offensive on cities across Ukraine NHK

Russia has carried out a large-scale offensive across Ukraine using missiles and other weapons. Ukrainian authorities say the attacks have killed at least 16 people.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post on Friday that "Russia used nearly every type of weapon in its arsenal," including missiles and drones.

The president said the capital Kyiv, the eastern cities of Dnipro and Kharkiv, the western city of Lviv, the southern city of Odesa and other cities were attacked.

He said that a maternity ward, educational facilities, a shopping mall and other sites were struck.

Zelenskyy stressed, "We will surely respond to terrorist strikes."

Ukrainian prosecutors said the major Russian assault has so far left 16 people dead and 97 others injured. They said a total of around 150 missiles and other weapons were fired on Ukraine.

The Russian military said the operation caused damage to all of its targets.

Observers say the Russian strikes may have been in retaliation for a Ukrainian missile attack against a port in Crimea on Tuesday that destroyed Russia's landing ship Novocherkassk.
