Senior officials from Taiwan have visited the United States and reportedly held talks with US officials. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and National Security Council Secretary General Wellington Koo visited the American Institute in Taiwan's headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, on Tuesday. US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and senior officials from the White House and the US Defense Department visited the office around the same time. Taiwan media reported that the two sides talked for around seven hours, likely about diplomatic and security matters. The two sides have reportedly held such closed-door meetings for years, without confirmation from either side. It is unusual that media were allowed to cover the officials' entering the possible meeting venue. The US and Taiwan have no formal diplomatic ties. US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Chase, who is the Pentagon's top China official, reportedly visited Taiwan last week. Exchange between the US and Taiwan has apparently become active at a time when US-China relations remain tense over treatment of Taiwan and the recent shooting down of a Chinese balloon by the US.
