Snow has been falling along the Sea of Japan coast and in the mountainous regions due to a strong cold air mass and a winter pressure pattern. Weather officials say the snowfall has passed its peak, but intermittent snow is expected to continue in northern and eastern Japan through Tuesday. During the six-hour period through 6 p.m. on Sunday, 15 centimeters of snow accumulated in Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture. Minakami Town's Fujiwara in Gunma Prefecture got 14 centimeters, and 12 centimeters fell in Nozawaonsen Village in Nagano Prefecture. The depth of snow exceeded the season's average in many areas because of a series of cold waves. Three meters and 15 centimeters of snow accumulated in Sumon in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture as of 6 p.m. on Sunday, while Nishikawa Town's Oisawa in Yamagata Prefecture got 3 meters and 8 centimeters. The season's strongest cold air mass has gradually weakened, but is expected to remain for some time, causing intermittent snow in northern and eastern Japan through Tuesday. The total snowfall in the 24-hour period through Monday evening is expected to be as much as 50 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture, and it could reach 30 centimeters in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku and northern Kanto. Strong winds with snow are forecast in northern and eastern Japan through Tuesday, with waves off the coast likely to remain high across the country. Weather officials are urging caution against avalanches, power outages, falling trees, high waves as well as traffic disruptions caused by snow and icy roads.
