Toyota, Mazda to halt production of 5 models NHK

Two of five Japanese carmakers that uncovered misconduct while carrying out a government-ordered internal probe are to suspend production of affected models starting Thursday.

Toyota, Mazda, Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki were found on Monday to have falsified performance tests to obtain government certifications for their vehicles.

Of them, Toyota and Mazda will halt production of a total of five models in line with a transport ministry order to suspend shipments of them.

Toyota will stop producing its Yaris Cross and two other models at plants in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures until June 28.

Mazda is set to suspend production of its Mazda2 and another vehicle at plants in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures.

Concerns are rising about the impact the production suspension will have on local economies and business partners.

Production volume in fiscal 2023 of the models whose output will be suspended was a total of 130,000 units for Toyota and 15,000 units for Mazda.
