US President Donald Trump says his administration will "pause migration" from "Third World" countries following the shooting of two National Guard members. One of them has died.
Investigative authorities detained a 29-year-old Afghan national as a suspect in Wednesday's shooting near the White House.
The authorities said the suspect had entered the United States under a program that accepts people who helped the US military in Afghanistan.
The Trump administration halted immigration processing for Afghans following the shooting.
Trump posted on social media on Thursday that US immigration policy has eroded living conditions for many people. He said he will "permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries" to allow the US system to fully recover. He did not name the countries.
Trump said, "Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation." He also said he will "denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and deport any Foreign National who is deemed a public charge" or a security risk. He also announced that he will end all federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens.
