Russian independent media: Casualties of more than 90,000 troops in Ukraine NHK

Russia's independent media outlet says the country has suffered casualties of more than 90,000 troops in the military campaign in Ukraine.

Vazhnye Istorii reported the irretrievable losses of the Russian army on Wednesday, citing a current officer of Russia's Federal Security Service and another source. It says more than 90,000 soldiers have been either killed, unaccounted for, or disabled and cannot return to military service.

The number is in a sharp contrast to the account by Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu. He said last month that 5,937 Russian soldiers had died in the operation in Ukraine when he explained the partial call-up of military reservists announced by President Vladimir Putin.

In Ukraine, Russian forces continued their missile attacks on cities across the country on Thursday, while Ukrainian forces made advances in the southern Kherson region to retake Russian-controlled areas.

The southern city of Mykolaiv was hit by Russian missiles in predawn hours.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service says that two residents of a five-story building were killed and five others have been unaccounted for, after it was hit by a missile.

Ukrainian authorities in the Kyiv region reported drone attacks on the outskirts of the capital Kyiv on Thursday morning.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, says a total of 37 civilians had been killed and 134 injured in the two days through Tuesday due to the Russian missile attacks.

Moscow says they retaliated for last Saturday's explosion on the key bridge linking Russia and Crimea.

Ukrainian forces have reportedly intensified their counteroffensives in the eastern regions and southern Kherson region. A US think tank, the Institute for the Study of War, said on Wednesday that Ukrainian troops had liberated five settlements in the northern part of the Kherson region.

The British defence ministry said in its intelligence update on Thursday that in recent days, the Russian occupation authorities have likely ordered a preparation for evacuation of some civilians from Kherson.

The ministry said that it is likely that they anticipate combat extending to the city of Kherson itself.
