Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa is scheduled to attend meetings at the United Nations that will coincide with the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Hayashi will leave for New York on Wednesday. During his four-day stay, he will urge UN members to vote for a draft resolution calling for peace in Ukraine. The draft requests an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops. It was submitted by Ukraine and co-sponsored by Japan and other countries. Hayashi is also set to attend ministerial talks at the UN Security Council on Friday. He is expected to denounce Russia and stress the need to maintain and strengthen international order based on the rule of law. Japan is serving as the rotating chair of the Group of Seven nations and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The country hopes to gain recognition for responding to the situation in Ukraine before hosting a G7 summit in Hiroshima in May.
