Foreign ministers arrive in India for G20 meeting NHK

Foreign ministers from the Group of 20 are arriving in New Delhi for a two-day meeting that starts later on Wednesday. A major focus is whether they can find consensus amid deepening divisions over the war in Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang are among the attendees. Top diplomats are also likely to discuss how to deal with soaring energy and food prices.

Ahead of the meeting's opening, Lavrov landed in the Indian capital on Tuesday. He has been holding bilateral talks with his Indian counterpart and others.

The United States, Britain and other European countries strongly condemn Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. They have imposed economic sanctions on Russia, but China is against the move.

India has been taking a leadership role among emerging and developing countries. The nations make up the so-called "Global South," which has not sided with the West or Russia. India says it intends to make sure their voices are heard at the meeting.

The main talks will be held on Thursday.
