The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution, which calls on Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine for the damage that its military operation is causing. The resolution was adopted on Monday. Ninety-four member countries voted in favor of it. Fourteen voted against it, and 73 countries abstained. The resolution was sponsored by the Netherlands and other nations. It calls for Russia to be held accountable for violating international law by invading Ukraine. It urges Russia to pay reparations for any damage that has been caused by its wrongful acts. The resolution is not legally binding. Ukraine's ambassador to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, addressed the assembly before the vote. He said that it is time to hold Russia accountable. Russia's UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, argued back that the West is trying to draw out and aggravate the conflict. Japan, the United States and other Western nations are among the 94 members that supported the resolution. Russia and China are two of the 14 countries that voted against it. India and Brazil are among the 73 countries that abstained. The latest vote reflects a deepening of the international divide over the Ukraine crisis. Last month, 143 members of the UN General Assembly voted to adopt a resolution condemning Russia's unilateral attempt to annex four Ukrainian regions.
