NHK has learned that Japanese heavy industry firm IHI has revised a recruitment plan to increase the number of workers in its defense division in line with a government decision to ramp up defense spending. Sources say IHI has decided to hire 300 experienced people by around fiscal 2025. This will bring the division's workforce from 550 to at least 850 -- an addition of more than 50 percent. The firm had announced in September it would hire 100 experienced workers for its aerospace and defense businesses. IHI aims to boost work on engines for next-generation fighter jets being jointly developed by Japan, Britain and Italy. It also plans to upgrade the engines of aircraft supplied to the defense ministry. Other Japanese firms in the heavy industry sectors are also moving to bolster their defense-related businesses. Mitsubishi Electric plans to add about 1,000 workers in its defense- and space-related businesses. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries aims to boost its defense-related workforce by about 30 percent over a three-year period starting in April.
