WHO reports first human death from H3N8 bird flu NHK

The World Health Organization says a 56-year-old woman in China has become the first person to die from the H3N8 subtype of avian influenza.

The WHO announced on Tuesday that the woman from the southern Chinese province of Guangdong died on March 16.

Health authorities in the province says she had underlying conditions such as multiple myeloma.

The WHO says the woman had a history of exposure to live poultry.

The authorities are urging people to avoid contact with live poultry.

Human infections with the H3N8 virus were first confirmed in inland parts of China last year.
