Major Japanese drink maker Suntory Beverage & Food has developed a plastic bottle that's meant to be easier on the environment. It features a crushable design to make recycling more efficient.
Suntory says the two-liter container for its popular mineral water brand can be crushed to about one-sixth its original size.
The bottle is easier to squeeze in the middle and has lines to let users know where to fold. The company says the smaller shape means less bags are needed for recycling collection.
Managing Executive Officer of Suntory Beverage & Food, Sato Akiyo, says that they believe the container will make customers more aware of recycling, and raising consumer awareness could lead to a change in the industry.
Coca-Cola Japan also switched its roughly half-liter plastic bottles to easy-to-crush designs last December.
