A former senior White House official who heads the US liaison office with Taiwan has told its president-elect Lai Ching-te that the US government will continue its commitment to Taiwan affairs.

Laura Rosenberger, who is visiting Taiwan from Sunday, held talks with President Tsai Ing-wen and Lai separately on Monday.

Lai of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party won the presidential election in January and will launch his administration in May.

Rosenberger told Lai: "The US commitment as you know is rock-solid, it is principled and it's bipartisan, and that's not changing."

She also said the United States will continue to deliver on its long-standing commitment to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capacity.

In January, Rosenberger visited Taiwan immediately after the presidential election.

Observers say her visit this time, which comes ahead of the launch of Lai's administration, is apparently aimed at discussing policies on China.

Meanwhile, former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou of the opposition Kuomintang party is visiting China from Monday.

The recent developments can be seen as efforts by the US and China to gain influence before the launch of the new administration in Taiwan.
