Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is likely to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Bangkok next week.

Kishida plans to leave Tokyo on Saturday evening for Cambodia after taking part remotely in meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations earlier in the day.

After attending more ASEAN meetings in Cambodia in person, he will visit Indonesia and Thailand to attend summits of the Group of 20 and the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum.

Japanese government officials are making final adjustments for Kishida and Xi to meet in the Thai capital, where the APEC summit will take place.

The in-person summit would be the first in about three years, and the first since Kishida took office.

He is expected to assert Japan's positions on the issues of the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea and the situation in Taiwan.

Japan controls the islands. The Japanese government maintains that they are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

Kishida is expected to call on Xi to make sure China fulfills its responsibility as a major power and tell him Japan is ready to cooperate where it can.

Kishida hopes to agree with Xi to build a constructive and stable relationship through efforts by both sides, as the two countries this year marked the 50th anniversary of normalizing their diplomatic ties.
