Death toll from powerful quake in Cebu, Philippines, rises to 68 NHK

Philippine authorities say 68 people have died after a major earthquake struck the central Philippine island of Cebu. A massive rescue operation is underway to find survivors.
The magnitude 6.9 quake centered in waters off the coast of Cebu struck at around 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure has been reported especially in the northern part of the island.
Local media say hospitals have been overwhelmed by people seeking medical treatment. The Philippine coast guard has deployed a vessel to the affected area carrying medical staff and aid.
Cebu Island was hit by a powerful typhoon last week, and recovery work was still ongoing.
The island is a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from many countries.
