Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Junior has said he hopes for stronger relations with China under the fresh mandate of President Xi Jinping. Marcos made the comment even as a territorial dispute in the South China Sea remains unresolved.
                
The president delivered a speech on Thursday in the southern Philippine city of Davao. He was at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a bridge between the city and Samal island.
                
The 4-kilometer bridge project is funded through a loan from China worth 350 million US dollars.
                
The Philippine leader said he extends his congratulations for the &quot;successful conduct&quot; of the Communist Party Congress that wrapped up last weekend. Xi secured a historic third term.
But meanwhile, the two countries are still locked in a territorial dispute in the South China Sea.
                
The Philippines took part in a military drill with the US, Japan and South Korea this month in the disputed waters.
