Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Junior has said he hopes for stronger relations with China under the fresh mandate of President Xi Jinping. Marcos made the comment even as a territorial dispute in the South China Sea remains unresolved. The president delivered a speech on Thursday in the southern Philippine city of Davao. He was at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a bridge between the city and Samal island. The 4-kilometer bridge project is funded through a loan from China worth 350 million US dollars. The Philippine leader said he extends his congratulations for the "successful conduct" of the Communist Party Congress that wrapped up last weekend. Xi secured a historic third term. But meanwhile, the two countries are still locked in a territorial dispute in the South China Sea. The Philippines took part in a military drill with the US, Japan and South Korea this month in the disputed waters.
