Palestinians from Gaza City and nearby areas are returning home after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect. They are coming back from areas in the south where they were forced to flee to avoid attacks by Israeli forces.
Residents are heading north in cars fully loaded with belongings, and many others are traveling on foot. Some women and the elderly are moving after younger people checked their homes and roads for damage.
One of the residents said, &quot;Our feelings are mixed. It&#039;s good, but we&#039;re heading back into ruins.&quot;
Another said, &quot;May this be the last of our sorrows, and remembered but never repeated.&quot;
A senior government official said the US is sending a team to monitor the ceasefire. The official said about 200 personnel from the US Central Command will be involved in setting up a kind of joint task force. They will work alongside monitors from other countries, including Egypt, Qatar and Turkey.
However, the official said they will not be dispatched to Gaza.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on social media that up to 200 military personnel will monitor the ceasefire in Israel.
