Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong have agreed to deepen their countries' security cooperation at a summit. The two leaders met at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo for about 40 minutes on Monday evening. They agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in consideration of this year's 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties. In light of China's increasing maritime assertiveness in the region, they agreed to discuss utilizing a new official assistance framework to enhance security cooperation. The OSA framework enables Japan to provide defense equipment to like-minded nations. On the situation in Ukraine, they confirmed that a fair and long-lasting peace based on international law should be built. Both leaders stressed the need for diplomatic efforts to deescalate the Israel-Hamas conflict. At a joint news conference after the talks, Kishida said they agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a partnership for regional and global peace and prosperity. He said he is committed to further developing the friendship with Vietnam.
