Members of Doctors Without Borders have called for boosting international support to Sudan, saying the conflict-stricken country is suffering from serious shortages of food and medical supplies. They made the call at an event in Tokyo on Tuesday. The conflict erupted in April last year between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The United Nations says the conflict has left at least 10,000 people dead and forced more than 8.4 million people to flee their homes. Sato Taichiro, a nurse who has been working at a hospital in the state of West Darfur since January, took part in the event online. He said the hospital is visited by more than 1,000 patients each week, including children suffering from malnutrition. He said some children are unable to sleep or speak because of their harsh experiences. He added that many women have been sexually abused. Other participants from the NGO also reported that the medical system in Sudan is on the verge of collapse due to a lack of staff, medical supplies and fuel. Ochiai Atsuhiko called for increasing medical and food assistance to the country. After evacuating, he took charge of supporting people who fled to neighboring South Sudan. Ochiai said people may have forgotten about Sudan amid the humanitarian crises in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine. He added that urgent international support is vital.
