Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko insists the decision to station nuclear weapons in his country is for self-defense. His comments come after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last week that the two leaders have agreed to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. In a state of the nation address in Minsk on Friday, Lukashenko said they intensively discussed the issue in light of the current circumstances facing Belarus. He insisted that he is not trying to intimidate or blackmail anyone, but wants to protect his country and ensure the people can live in peace. Lukashenko also referred to neighbor and NATO member Poland as a threat. He and Putin are expected to discuss their plan again at a meeting in Moscow next week. Belarus gave up nuclear weapons in the 1990s.
