S.Korean presidential office announces personnel shakeup NHK

South Korea's presidential office has announced a personnel shuffle widely seen as an attempt to salvage the government's poor support rate.

The changes were revealed on Thursday.

The president's chief of staff Kim Dae-ki leaves his post.

First Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin will become national security advisor. He replaces Cho Tae-yong, who has been nominated as head of the National Intelligence Service.

A shakeup is also underway in the ruling People Power Party. Starting Friday, a new interim leadership headed by former Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon will take control.

Han has proven popular in opinion polls, and is widely seen as a future presidential candidate.

The changes within the party are also seen as an attempt to shore up the public's confidence.

South Korea's next general election is slated for April.
