EV sales jump in US before Biden-era tax credits expire NHK

US car dealers are seeing a surge in sales of electric vehicles, as buyers rush to claim EV tax credits before they expire at the end of this month.

The program introduced under the Joe Biden administration offers up to 7,500 dollars in credits for EV purchases. But the subsidies are being abolished by the Donald Trump administration.

A dealership affiliated with a Japanese automaker in New York state says sales of EVs in August jumped more than 60 percent from a year earlier.

"It was a record for us, for EV sales, and made up nearly 20 percent of our overall sales, which is really fantastic," said car dealer Brian Benstock. "It was a great contribution to the overall volume of the store."

The end of the credit program is also causing automakers to shift production strategies.

Nissan has suspended Japanese production of its Ariya EV for export to the United States.

Honda says it will stop making the ZDX all-electric SUV of its luxury Acura brand at a General Motors plant in Tennessee.
