N.Korea warns of 'toughest reaction' after US, S.Korea hold air drills NHK

The US and South Korean militaries have conducted combined air drills involving B-1 bombers over waters west of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea's defense ministry says the drills took place on Wednesday over the Yellow Sea. They featured B-1 bombers from the US Air Force, as well as state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighter jets from the US and South Korean militaries.

An image released by the ministry shows the bombers and the fighter jets flying in formation.

South Korean officials stressed that they will respond firmly to nuclear and missile threats from Pyongyang.

On Thursday, North Korea's foreign ministry warned of the "toughest reaction" to any US military action.

The ministry issued a statement following the talks between the US and South Korean defense chiefs on Tuesday. It criticized the defense chiefs' pledge to enhance "extended deterrence," in which the US protects its allies with nuclear and other weapons.

It said Pyongyang's response to any US military attempt will be based on the principle of "nuke for nuke and an all-out confrontation for an all-out confrontation."

It warned that if the US continues to introduce strategic assets into the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding area, Pyongyang "will make clearer its deterring activities without fail according to their nature."
