Japanese officials have started accepting online applications for new passports in all prefectures. The online application system started two years ago in some prefectures, including Chiba and Saitama. But applicants had to submit a family register certificate separately. From Monday, residents in all prefectures can submit applications online, as the system has been upgraded and linked to family register information. At a passport center in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, a metropolitan government official gave a briefing on the new application system. The official explained that people can prepare an application on their smartphone if they have a "My Number" national identification card. On Monday, more than 30 applicants had lined up at the passport center before the acceptance of applications began at 9 a.m. An applicant said applying online will be convenient, pointing out there will be no need to take time off work to apply as before. Another also welcomed the online application, saying the passport center is always crowded. Applicants will still have to visit a center to pick up their passport. But a Tokyo official said the online application system is expected to reduce the number of people applying at passport centers by about 25 percent. The official said the new system will offer benefits in terms of convenience as well as congestion reduction.
