Japan police arrest 15-year-old boy in stabbing death of elderly woman NHK

Japanese police have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of fatally stabbing an elderly woman on a street in Chiba City, near Tokyo.



The arrest came on Monday afternoon after police had questioned the junior high school student on a voluntary basis. The boy lives in the city.



Investigation sources say the teenager and the victim likely were strangers.



The 84-year-old woman was found collapsed and bleeding on a street in the Wakamatsucho district in the city's Wakaba Ward shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday.



She was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead. She had reportedly been stabbed in the back.



Police identified the woman as Takahashi Yayoi, a resident of the neighborhood.



They examined security camera footage in the area, and had questioned the boy on a voluntary basis before seeking his arrest warrant.



Police say the boy admitted to the allegations during questioning.



They say the woman had some cash with her when she was found.



Police are continuing to question the boy to find out what led to the attack and how it happened.
