Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has called on businesses worldwide and others to proactively engage in research and development of vaccines and other medical products that will help children in developing countries.
        
                    
                  
In an event held in Tokyo on Tuesday, Gates said: &quot;The returns to research go way beyond the company that does that work. The benefits to society are huge.&quot;
        
                    
                  
Representatives from companies and universities were among the attendees.
        
                    
                  
Gates is currently in Japan ahead of a Japan-led global conference on African development, which will open in Yokohama, near Tokyo, on Wednesday.
        
                    
                  
Gates told the audience that he has been helping developing countries address infectious diseases and other health problems through the foundation he established.
        
                    
                  
He went on to say that the activities are facing a challenge in terms of funding. He also said given the pressure on the budget of rich countries, it is unlikely that the amount of money provided to children in Africa will increase much.
        
                    
                  
Some humanitarian assistance groups around the world are finding it difficult to continue their activities as European countries and the United States are cutting down on their financial support.
        
                    
                  
Speaking about the benefits of research he said, &quot;Health is a win, win. Any drug that Japan discovers benefits the entire world.&quot;
