A city in Taiwan has held disaster drills to enhance its preparedness for a possible Chinese military attack. Around 600 people, including police, firefighters, and private-sector volunteers, took part in the drills in the northern city of Taoyuan on Thursday. Participants practiced putting out a fire at a fuel tank on the pier by hosing it from a boat. They also practiced rescuing people who were stranded on ships or had fallen into the sea, and giving them first aid before sending them to hospital by ambulance. Volunteers and city officials set up an evacuation facility in the gymnasium of a junior high school. Tents of different sizes were used to ensure privacy. The participants rehearsed their responses to a variety of emergency situations that included evacuees developing illnesses and air raid sirens going off. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started in 2022, Taiwanese authorities have instructed local government officials to include responses to a possible Chinese military attack in their annual disaster drills. Similar drills are scheduled to take place in ten other areas of Taiwan through July.
