The Naruko Gorge in the city of Osaki boasts towering cliffs reaching heights of 100 meters.
A bird's-eye view shows maple and beech leaves turning rich shades of red and yellow, contrasting with green pine leaves and rocky surfaces.
On Monday, visitors were seen taking photos from vantage points such as an observation platform and a bridge. Many also enjoyed the scenery while strolling along a river.
A local tourism association says the leaves began their annual transformation around October 20, as usual.
It also says that in addition to visitors traveling from other parts of Japan, tourists from China, Taiwan and elsewhere are making a return.
Trains in the area are running slower than usual along part of their route to allow passengers to enjoy the view.
The autumn foliage season at Naruko will continue until early November.
