Palestinians protest killing of Hamas official NHK

Palestinians have taken to the streets to protest the killing of a senior Hamas official on Tuesday in the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

Protesters gathered across the West Bank on Wednesday to mourn those who died in the attack. Hamas says seven people were killed in the strike which it says was carried out by Israel.

The senior official who died in the bombing was one of the founders of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas that carried out the attack on Israel in October.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh called the attack an "assassination" and a "complete act of terrorism."
Satellite TV station Al Arabiya reported Hamas has stopped negotiations with Israel over a halt to the fighting and the release of hostages.

The Shia militant group Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, warned of retaliation against Israel, saying the assassination "will not go without a response or punishment."

Hezbollah has repeatedly bombarded northern Israel. The Israeli military has also frequently bombed southern Lebanon, triggering tit-for-tat attacks.
Concerns are growing that tensions in the region may escalate.
