At the United Nations climate change conference in Azerbaijan, developed and emerging nations are engaged in bitter debate over financial aid for developing countries, which are tackling global warming. The COP29 meeting kicked off in Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Monday, and the two-day summit-level meeting entered the second day on Wednesday. This year's conference plans to set new goals for financial assistance for developing countries. The main focus is on whether such support can be increased. Developed countries want emerging economies to also contribute funds to the effort. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said at the meeting that African nations, such as his country, are facing challenges in implementing environmental measures due to a shortage of funds. With regard to target amounts, he said: "We stress the need for us to have a quantitative and qualitative goals. And the main goal must be met first and foremost by the developed countries." On Tuesday, China's top-ranked vice premier, Ding Xuexiang, said Beijing is calling on developed countries to increase financial support and technology transfers to developing nations, and also hopes that more ambitious funding targets will be set at the meeting. The discussion comes amid growing concerns that the United States, a major donor, may suspend its contributions. That's because President-elect Donald Trump is not supportive about taking measures against global warming.
