Japan's chief trade negotiator has suggested that the United States is eager to prepare a joint document on a trade agreement in July.
Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa Ryosei told reporters on Tuesday that Japan's priority is to have the US lower tariffs at once on automobiles and other products. He reiterated that the Japanese government is not preparing an agreement document.
Akazawa said it is the US that tends to see the benefit of drawing up such a document.
The minister said some agreement items are aimed at realizing Japan's interests, so he wants the US to implement them. He said Japan will take all possible actions to urge the US to execute the agreement including issuing an executive order to lower the tariff on automobiles and auto parts.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said the trade deal with Japan, including a 550-billion-dollar investment in the US, will be announced later this week.
