Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to ask the United States to keep providing military aid when he speaks before a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday. Netanyahu is visiting the country for the first time since the conflict between the Israeli military and Islamic group Hamas began last October. He is likely to express gratitude for the US' assistance, and ask for continued bipartisan support by stressing that Israel is fighting against armed groups aligned with Hamas in the Middle East. Netanyahu is likely to meet President Joe Biden, who has announced that he dropped his re-election bid, and his prospective successor Vice President Kamala Harris. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said on Tuesday that it conducted air and ground attacks in Khan Younis in southern Gaza after telling residents to evacuate from specific areas the previous day. Health authorities in Gaza say the attacks killed 73 people, and the death toll since the fighting began has reached 39,090. A man who has evacuated to Khan Younis said he hopes for an immediate ceasefire so relief supplies will be brought in and reconstruction work will start. Another man said he cannot expect a ceasefire because the US is an ally of Israel.
