Indonesian authorities say more than 100 poll workers died in connection with one of the world's largest ever one-day elections earlier this month. Health officials cite exhaustion as the main cause. The country's health ministry says a total of 115 workers died during the election period which lasted from February 10 to 26. Most of them died due to diseases triggered by exhaustion including heart disease, hypertension and respiratory problems. Nearly 60% of those who died were between the ages of 41 and 60. In addition, some 15,000 workers fell sick and had to be hospitalized. On election day, about 5.7 million people were enlisted to work at about 800,000 polling stations around the country, on shifts lasting more than 12 hours. The voters picked not only the president and vice president, but also legislative members and senators in a single day. Experts say the country's election system places a heavy burden on poll workers. In the 2019 general election, nearly 900 workers died.
