A senior Iranian government official says President Ebrahim Raisi has been invited to Saudi Arabia by King Salman bin Abdulaziz. Iran's deputy chief of staff for political affairs to the president tweeted on Sunday that Raisi received a letter from the Saudi king welcoming the deal earlier this month to reestablish diplomatic ties between their countries. Mohammad Jamshidi wrote that Raisi welcomed the invitation and stressed Iran's readiness to expand cooperation. The Saudi government has not made an official announcement on the letter. Iran and Saudi Arabia on March 10 reached an agreement brokered by China to normalize diplomatic relations and to reopen embassies in each other's countries. Tehran and Riyadh cut diplomatic ties in 2016 after protesters in Iran attacked the Saudi Arabian embassy following the execution of a Shia Muslim cleric by Saudi Arabia. Iran's state-run news agency has quoted Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as saying at a news conference on Sunday that he will meet with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud soon.
