A weeping cherry tree said to be more than 400 years old is blooming at a temple in Fukui Prefecture along the Sea of Japan. The tree at Kogyoji temple in Eiheiji Town is about nine meters tall, with a circumference of about three meters at the base. The tree previously started rotting after two fires, but has produced many flowers following treatment in 1982. This year, the cherry tree blossomed about one week later than usual. The temple's courtyard will be open to the public through Wednesday. The tree will be illuminated on Saturday and Sunday. One monk said he hopes the tree's perseverance serves as a source of encouragement to the visitors.
