Kyiv probes allegations Russians shot surrendering Ukrainian soldiers NHK

Authorities in Ukraine are investigating allegations that Russian forces killed surrendering Ukrainian soldiers. A video released by local media appears to show two military personnel being shot after emerging from a dugout.

The video published on Saturday shows soldiers surrendering with hands up and lying down on the ground. The Russian troops then appear to open fire.

Ukrainian prosecutors said on Sunday that the video shows a group in Russian uniforms shooting at close range two servicemen in Ukrainian uniforms who surrendered as prisoners. They said killing prisoners of war is a war crime and violates the Geneva Convention.

The prosecutors said the incident is believed to have taken place in the suburbs of Avdiivka, the site of some of the fiercest fighting in recent weeks in the eastern region of Donetsk.

Russia has not issued any comment on the matter.

Regarding war crimes allegedly committed by Russia, Ukrainian prosecutors and the International Criminal Court are investigating the forcible transfer and deportation of Ukrainian children by Russia. They are also looking into the discovery of more than 400 bodies of civilians in Bucha following Ukraine's recapture of the town on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Russian forces continue aerial attacks on Ukraine's electricity and other energy-related facilities as winter sets in.

Ukraine's air force announced on Monday that it shot down 18 of 23 Iranian-made drones and one missile that Russia fired at Ukrainian territory.
