N.Korea convenes key meeting of Workers' Party Central Committee NHK

North Korea has convened a key meeting of the ruling Workers' Party to discuss policies for next year.

State-run Korean Central television reported on Tuesday that the plenary meeting of the Central Committee opened the previous day, with leader Kim Jong Un in attendance.

The meeting is being held at the year-end for the second year in a row.

The state media said that five items are on the agenda, including a review of this year's policies and business plans for next year.

Kim said in his opening speech that North Korea's national power was strengthened in all aspects of politics, military, and economics through this year's unprecedentedly arduous and intense struggle.

He apparently pointed to the country's increased missile launches and responses to coronavirus infections.

The party's Rodong Sinmun newspaper noted that the participants were listening to the report of Kim, who specified the strategic and tactical guidelines to promote a new leap forward in socialist construction.

Kim had stated that next year marks the 75th anniversary of the country's founding, and described 2023 as a historic year to be glorified with greater victories and successes than this year.

Attention is on what policies the ruling party will adopt regarding the country's nuclear and missile development, as well as bilateral relations with the United States.
