Sales of non-personalized Suica and Pasmo IC cards, which are used to pay for train fares and other payments in Japan, will resume in March. New issuance of Suica and Pasmo cards was suspended in 2023 with some exceptions, including as commuter passes, following a global shortage of semiconductors.
                
The cards are administered by East Japan Railway and an industrial group comprising private train operators in the Tokyo area and others. They announced that the type of Suica and Pasmo card on which users&#039; names are not printed will go on sale again from March 1.
                
Last September, the administrators resumed the sale of their IC cards which carry users&#039; names and are tied to personal information. The administrators said they were able to secure a sufficient stock of the cards as the semiconductor shortage was over.
                
East Japan Railway apologized for the inconvenience it has caused to customers. The company said it will work to secure the provision of the cards for the future.
