North Korea claims successful launch of new Hwasong-19 ICBM NHK

North Korea says the missile it test-fired on Thursday was the latest model of the Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missile. This is the first time the country has reported a launch of its new ICBM.

State-run Korean Central Television said leader Kim Jong Un was at the launch site. A video aired on Friday morning shows a 22-wheel mobile launch pad emerging from a forest. The missile, painted in a black-and-white checkered pattern, was fired after a countdown. It emitted a massive cloud of white smoke as it rose into the sky.

According to state media, the missile reached a maximum altitude of 7,687.5 kilometers and flew a distance of 1,001.2 kilometers before landing in the targeted area in open waters in the Sea of Japan.

North Korea describes the missile as the "ultimate version" of an ICBM. Kim is quoted as saying, "The successful test-fire of the new-type ICBM proved before the world that the hegemonic position we have secured" is "absolutely irreversible."

Kim also reportedly said North Korea "would never change its line of bolstering up its nuclear forces," stressing that his country will press forward with its nuclear and missile development.
