Japanese firms in ASEAN pledge local decarbonization efforts NHK

Japanese chambers of commerce and industry in Southeast Asia have pledged to strengthen businesses that support de-carbonization in the region.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of friendship and cooperative relations between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

A total of about 15,000 Japanese companies are operating in the region.

Members of the Federation of Japanese Chambers of Commerce and Industry in ASEAN gathered in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Wednesday.

They exchanged views with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.

Japanese firms are involved in around 550 projects, including geothermal-power generation, to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions in Indonesia.

Some ASEAN countries heavily rely on thermal power.

The firms' representatives vowed to expand clean-energy generation in the region.

Ueda Hiroyuki, chairman of the Federation of Japanese Chambers of Commerce and Industry in ASEAN, said Japanese companies operating in ASEAN hope to contribute to the future development and prosperity of ASEAN economies, as well as its citizens and governments by creating jobs through businesses and by fostering human resource and technology.

China is ASEAN's largest trading partner. South Korea is also increasing its presence with its soft power such as popular music.

Japan faces the challenge of how to make its presence felt in the region.
