The Japanese government intends to set new targets for cutting the country's greenhouse gas emissions as part of a plan to fight global warming. The government compiled the plan at a meeting on Friday. It calls for slashing emissions from fiscal 2013 levels by 60 percent in fiscal 2035 and 73 percent in fiscal 2040. The plan includes measures to achieve the targets. Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said setting goals is not enough and stressed the importance of central and local governments, companies and people taking action together. He also instructed Cabinet ministers to constantly review the measures and ensure they are implemented. The government will seek public opinion on the plan before submitting it to the Cabinet for approval. Officials will report the new targets to the United Nations by February next year.
