The Republican nominee for US president, Donald Trump, is getting ready to make a historic return to the White House. He won a sweeping victory over his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, and will become the 47th president. Harris called Trump to congratulate him on his win.
                
Trump declared victory early Wednesday morning when it became clear that Harris had no path to secure enough votes to win the election. He appeared before supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, joined by his wife, Melania, and his running mate, JD Vance.
                
Trump called his win the result of &quot;the greatest political movement of all time,&quot; adding: &quot;This will truly be the golden age of America. That&#039;s what we have to have. This is a magnificent victory for the American people that will allow us to make America great again. &quot;
                
He also said that the result has given him &quot;an unprecedented and powerful mandate&quot; and that he will &quot;fix everything&quot; in the country.
                
Democratic leaders also suffered a major setback in Congress. They saw the Republican Party regain control of the Senate. The results for the House of Representatives are still undecided.
