Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly said frustration with about three years of the coronavirus situation is behind protests against Beijing's strict "zero COVID" policy. Xi met with European Council President Charles Michel in Beijing on Thursday. A senior European Union official spoke about the content of the talks on Friday. The official said Xi also explained that the protesters are mainly students and teenagers, and argued that the Omicron variant is now the dominant strain in China and less fatal than Delta. The EU official reported that Xi did not elaborate whether the leadership will review its strict COVID policy. But the official added that Xi seemed to have hinted at easing it. It is the first time that the Chinese president's view on the protests has been made public.
