In Nepal, intense rainfall triggered major flooding and mudslides on September 28. Local police say that more than 190 people have been confirmed dead and dozens of people are still unaccounted for. Police and firefighters continue carrying out rescue operations. They are also contending with multiple blocked roads in the suburbs of the capital city of Kathmandu due to the mudslides. Authorities are using heavy machinery to remove debris. Residents are clearing mud and sand that have flowed into buildings. Nepal is in the middle of its monsoon season, when torrential rains often wreak havoc across the country. Some experts say that rainfall events are becoming more intense due to climate change.
